MUSIC IN THE NEWS: The Weezer Snuggie

I will admit that I laughed upon discovery of the Weezer and Snuggie combo promotion.  Weezer is a band that has always had a quirky presence – and that is about the only reason that they can get away with this.  Although this advertisement may be old news by now, I cannot get it out of my head and am quite intrigued by this creative band promotion.

In Saturday Night Live flavor, my first question is, “Really?”  Do you really need to use a product like the Snuggie to promote your new CD?  Funny enough, when I think about it further, the concept is borderline brilliant.  Weezer will not be labeled cheesy, because this sort of thing comes with the band’s image.  In fact, the shear comedic feel to this promotional tactic undoubtedly will get additional online media exposure.  Not to mention, Snuggie gets some great promotion targeting a generation that you wouldn’t normally classify to be late night infomercial shoppers.

Another thing that caught my attention was that this is the second time, I have seen an ad for Snuggie that almost makes fun of the product.  As much as I laugh at the product and the placement, I watch it, and watch it, and think… hey, I may actually want one of these.  Not to mention, I could get a CD too!

Getting back to the music, creative band promotion is always going to be something that is necessary in order to break through the millions of advertisements in the world today.  Weezer has utilized its personality to boost the promotion of their new album, “Raditude” (Released November 3rd 2009). Not all band promotion ideas and concepts will work for all bands. However, when you have branded your band successfully, you can utilize it and expand on it through the promotion of your music.
