If you dream of having your band's name written in the stars, you must understand that online band promotion is the driving force of music marketing today. From MySpace to PureVolume to YouTube, if a band is not there… it doesn’t exist. With such a large volume of music competing for attention, a band must breakthrough the clutter as uniquely attractive.
U2 has utilized a resource available to everyone and promoted themselves in front of roughly 10 million viewers with their live show last Sunday night. (Click here to view the show). Sure, a band such as U2 may have access to unlimited capital and opportunity, but the principal of the matter is that you want to expose your band to as many people as possible.
U2 has perked the ears of many people through their "360 Tour" which recently came to an end in Vancouver this past Wednesday. Most of this intrigue was centered around their custom designed stage which has been named “The Claw”. (Click here to view the stage). Although there is nothing spectacular and ground breaking, its shear size and character draws outsiders in to take a peak. Couple this with an opportunity to watch a live event for free and see this band in action, U2 undoubtedly increased their coverage to win the eyes of a few more potential followers.
The promotional strategy behind this lies in the ability of the band to create an event apart from the songs themselves which appeals to a larger audience who might not otherwise have interest. A creative idea or theme for a new band can go a long way. If you are at the drawing board when it comes to advertising your band, find an edge that will draw some extra faces through shear curiosity. 10 million streams later, you may just make YouTube history.
