ADVERTISING STRATEGY: SWOT Analysis

SWOT Analysis

Simply defined, the SWOT analysis is a marketing guide that summarizes a brand’s Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats.  As it pertains to band promotion, whether you are starting a band or re-evaluating your band’s marketing strategy, the SWOT analysis can outline important core elements of the current situation.  The SWOT analysis then becomes a fitting summary of the Situational Analysis within a marketing plan.

In the same way that a company or organization views a SWOT analysis, bands will identify an understanding of the potential for the band and the obstacles in reaching that next step.  As a SWOT analysis is a summary, the key is to be concise and straight forward.

SWOTAnalysis

Breaking down the SWOT Analysis for a rock band:

Strengths: Potential strengths for you band’s SWOT Analysis

- Resources, including but not limited to time, money and connections

- Geographic location such as local music scene or opportunities to be noticed

- Unique, attractive, or popular genre and musical talent

Weaknesses: Potential weaknesses for you band’s SWOT Analysis

- Lack of experience

- Limited resources, including but not limited to time, money, and connections

- Geographic location such as a weak music scene or long commutes between venues

Opportunities: Potential opportunities for you band’s SWOT Analysis

- Internet marketing and niche specific online communities

- Networking with local bands for targeted tours, shared practice spaces, and mutually beneficial connections

- Expanding musical appeal within genre (without selling out your sound)

Threats: Potential threats for you band’s SWOT Analysis

- Highly competitive music scene within your genre

- Financial challenges related to gear maintenance, necessary instrument upgrades, and entre fees or registration costs for events and shows

- New bands  with innovative and unique music appeal

In order for your band’s SWOT Analysis to be effective, you must be specific and goal oriented.  The purpose of the SWOT Analysis is to find areas of opportunity for your band to reach new listeners, build a fan base, and grow your band’s brand.  If you are vague in your discoveries, it will be difficult to formulate the action plan that follows in your band’s marketing strategy.

Many bands will likely have the same challenges in terms of finances and competition.  Similarly, every band thinks that the music is unique and ready to change the way music is perceived.  The reality is that honesty with where you are positioned as a new band will determine what steps your band can take to get more shows, more fans, and more financial stability.  If your band has great music ideas but is limited in raw talent to perform live music with perfect execution, be honest about it and strike an opportunity to practice harder both individually and as a band.
