REFLECTIONS: When You Try... You Fail

What happens when you try? …you fail.

Commitment and determination have such a high impact on success in any field.  For any aspiring musician tackling the challenge of starting a band, these words are not encouraging at all.  If the odds are stacked against you, why even try?  Why sacrifice and why risk finances, time, and relationships to try and succeed?  I think that is the point of the cliché above.  You never hear an Olympic Champion stand up on the podium with a gold medal around his or her neck and state that the reason they are there is because they tried.

There are two reasons this is true.  The first reason is because when you try, you fail… but I’ll get into that in a minute – the second reason is because your commitment determines your success – 100%.

Personally, the past 2 weeks have ravaged my personal time and beaten into my schedule with juggling prior engagements, work demands, and unexpected challenges.  It is very easy to get distracted from goals and aspirations by the day to day obstacles of life itself.  Breakthrough Band and my musical journey had to be put on the back burner for a short period so that I could take care of the here and now.  And this is good.  If I neglect my current responsibilities and relationships, I may sabotage more than what’s right in front of my face.

In this moment, commitment and determination enter stage left to get things back on track.  Easier said than done, but I know that if I hit certain consistent bench marks, I will reach my goals.  Specifically, it is time for me to track back into schedule with Breakthrough Band and continuing research into the life of a rock star and the steps to get there.  It is also time for me to refresh with my band practice and routine to inch further and further towards starting a band myself.

The reason I say this is to paint a picture of the simplicity and challenge of making a commitment to something.  During the rough times, it is easy to sit back and say, “Well, I tried”.  But when you try, you fail.  I am not trying to build a web site of tips and advice for aspiring musicians, and I am not trying to start a band.  I am directing the growth of Breakthrough Band and I am taking action musically to be in the position where I can start a band.  There is no trying – just doing.

If you ask an Olympian or a rock star or a successful business man, you will find a common thread that stretched the path to the top – commitment.  With a realistic goal set in front of you and a commitment to do what it takes to succeed, you are no longer trying, but doing.

As a word of encouragement to me: Don’t Try – Commit.
